Hi Everyone,
I like the discussions so far. I am trying to get a bit more focused on exactly what cultural experiences are going to be exchanged. I know I will gain a lot, but I want to be as productive and beneficial to our group as possible. So I suppose my question is - is it appropriate to start to create/gather/collaborate all the resources we will be using all summer (I have lots of girly movies!) or Alice - do you have specific things you would like to cover or generally what has been discussed so far? Can we start "collaborating with the group members to define a compelling mission"? (that was your response to Maia's post) I think it's important for the students we're working with (women especially) to realize the everyday application of their education. I know many good team building and leadership, self-worth training activities from my time at camp. As well, I have a handle on some media programs, digital cameras and recording devices and hopefully I will be able to bring along some resources to share. Do you have any there already, other than the computers? Also, I think the women's self-efficacy promotion/education would greatly benefit the male 'together we FLY' students as well.
I was wondering if there is a site or if anyone has the "curriculum" or what are the students taught in the school? Also, how do I find what the requirements are for the high school exit test? This would be great to know so we could possibly direct the learning process to fit with the contexts that have been learning in so far.
Google Sketch-Up is a great program and I was going to suggest that if you had an alternative program!
Hope you're all doing well and I'm getting excited for the summer - take care!

Hi everyone,
This is Jenn, the new third member to the team. I am really excited to get this project off the ground.
As for ideas, I hope that you are ready to read because I have tons.
Literacy
I wrote the curriculum for an all girls school in Calgary Alberta Canada for grades 4-9. It is called the Alice Jamieson All Girls School (if you want to look it up) and it is a charter program with the Calgary Board of Education. Since I was so active in the committee that designed and implemented the program in 2003 I was thinking of two things. First, I can get in touch with my Board contacts to see if I could get funding for new computers, books, or other materials. Secondly, I was thinking that we could set up a pen pal situation with the girls in Calgary with the girls in Guyana. This way they learn a little more about literacy and make a friend.
Since I wrote a text book for women’s empowerment, I am hoping to go through the aspects of the text book and find aspects that apply to the girls in Guyana to bring down. From what I know apart of the focus of this project is to empower the girls to further their education, and achieve better jobs.
I want to do a lot of research into projects of this kind implemented already in the world. Probably in Asia because the culture for women is very suppressive and I think that success stories from the region could really apply to Guyana. Do you have any thoughts about that?
So those are my ideas thus far with literacy.
Summer Activities
I was a girl guides leader for a few years and we did a lot of activities and camps in the summer that focused on female issues, while also being fun and active. Things like arts and crafts, and sports that get girls engaged while learning a lot about themselves. I think I could contact my old supervisor and get great ideas for games that do not require a lot of materials.
Sponsors
I was hoping to approach a few companies and people to look into sponsoring the QPID project this year, and the camp in further years. Either materials for books, activities, supplies for sports, crafts, or a playground. Do you have any ideas for that or suggestions.
Now…maybe a bit about me
As you can probably guess, I am really entheuastic and absolutely love this project. Although I got into it late in the game, I am the kind of person who takes ideas and pushes them to the next level. I am really great at approaching people and talking to people about anything, so if you need me to get contacts or sponsors, I am your girl.
Secondly, I love to interact with people of all ages. I work well with others and I am a leader in most situations. When I was working with the girl guides program in 2004, I loved getting together with the girls every week and being a friend to them, but also being a role model to them. I am hoping that the project this summer will be similar to that experience.
Anyways, I hope that this is enough to start and I look forward to hear some other ideas and get to know the rest of the team.
